Sixteen Years in Sixteen Seconds The Sammy Lee Story by Paula Yoo illustrated by Dom Lee

Ms. Yoo begins Sammy's story when he was twelve years old, longing to swim and dive on a day that was not Wednesday.  Wednesdays were the only days he was permitted to swim since he was a person of color.  Despite his limited access to a swimming pool, he rose above his circumstances and found ways to achieve excellence.  The book relates numerous obstacles he faced and how he overcame them to achieve his goal-winning a gold medal at the Olympics.
Author's note provides information about Sammy Lee beyond 1948.
