The Corn Grows Ripe by Dorothy Rhoads illustrated by Jean Charlot*

Award winning book-Newbery Honor Book
Judging this book by its cover and plot summary, I thought it would be dry and boring.  It was not!  I really enjoyed it.
Twelve year old Tigre, a Mayan boy, has enjoyed being a boy and playing.  Then his father breaks his leg while clearing the land for their corn crop.  Tigre finds himself entering manhood sooner than he expected as he clears, burns and plants the field himself.
The character development is apparent as Tigre rises up to new challenges.
This book also offers a look into the Mayan farming culture and their religious beliefs.
*Highly recommend.
