Bread books

 Two books about bread-

1. Hooray for Bread by Allan Ahlberg illustrated by Bruce Ingman

Readers witness the "life" of a loaf of bread and the many lives it feeds throughout one day.  Rhyming text

-Borrowed from the library.

2. Bread, Bread, Bread by Ann Morris photographs by Ken Heyman*
I loved this book!  Very simple text, but the photographs are expressive.   Everyone in the world enjoys some form of bread!   I read this aloud to my preschoolers at church.  The index reveals where the people in the photographs are from in the world and a sentence about that type of bread.
*Highly recommend.

Mr. Postmouse's Rounds by Marianne Dubuc**

Mr. Postmouse delivers packages and letters to various animals situated in homes/climes suited to their needs.

The text is sparse, but the illustrations brim with creativity, cleverness, humor and inferences.  The cross-sections of the homes invite the reader to linger and to make inferences.  Every illustration produced a smile as I marveled over Ms. Dubuc's wittiness.  Very fun book to read and to share!

Warning: Sensitive readers may be disturbed by the package the chickens receive.

**Highly, highly recommend.

Fallingwater by Marc Harshman and Anna Egan Smucker illustrated by Leuyen Pham

The Building of Frank Lloyd Wright's Masterpiece
My parents took my brother and me to Fallingwater when we were kids/teens and it made a lasting  impression on me.  A house built on a waterfall!!
This book reveals how Frank Lloyd Wright came to design the home and shows its building process.
A wonderful book to read before visiting this home.

The Shape of the World by K.L. Going by Lauren Stringer

A Portrait of Frank Lloyd Wright
Although this book is a  short biography, Ms. Going connects Frank Lloyd Wright's childhood experiences to his later success in a inspiring manner.
His mother provided him with blocks, art and opportunity to be in nature, all which impacted his career as he designed buildings.
The illustrations celebrate shapes!

The Darkest Dark by astronaut Chris Hadfield illustrated by The Fan Brothers*

Chris loves space and dreams of being astronaut.  He, however, is afraid of the dark which he discovers one night when he watches a televised showing of  Neil Armstrong on the moon will be a huge problem!  "Space was the darkest dark ever."
This book explores fear in a honest way and offers hope to anyone's whose fears may interfere with his/her dreams.
The Fan Brothers' illustrations are superb (We love their book The Night Gardener.  We own it.).
*Highly recommend.

Mule Train Mail by Craig Brown*

Mr. Brown describes the descent Anthony the Postman makes each day to deliver mail to his village, Supai,  at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
The reader experiences the breath-taking journey (and at times harrowing!) through Mr. Brown's illustrations.  He opens up a world that most children do not know exists!
I especially like how the reader must orient the book vertically once Anthony begins to travel down to the village and then horizontally once he reaches his destination.
Before writing this book, Mr. Brown actually rode along with Anthony on the mule train!
A fun book to read before taking a field trip to the post office.
-Borrowed from the library.
*Highly recommend.
Strategy: asking questions (I asked a lot of questions while I read this book aloud to my seven  year old!); inferring

Thankful by Eileen Spinelli illustrated by Archie Preston*

A brother and sister pretend to be people in a variety of careers.  The author then points out what that person may be thankful for-waitress for comfortable shoes, a poet for words that rhyme, doctor for well patients, sailor for sturdy boat etc.
Very sweet!
Perfect for Thanksgiving time or any time of the year.

When I Grow Up by Al Yankovic illustrated by Wes Hargis

Billy is excited for show and tell to share what he wants to be when he grow ups.  In humorous, rhyme Billy shares career after career after career until his teacher stops and asks him which one he will choose. He then relates how his great-grandfather is one hundred and three and "is still not quite sure what he wants to be!"
The book ends on a sweet note that will make primary teachers smile.
Expressive illustrations.
