Judy Moody Book Quiz Whiz by Megan McDonald illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds

Judy and her brother Stink are part of the Virginia Dare Bookworm Quiz team and are reading a ton of books.  In fact, their parents are punishing them for reading at certain times of the day!!
The team is gearing up to face the intimidating team from the Braintree Academy which has a fourth grader on it.
I love Judy Moody and Stink books (I actually Stink better.), but this one was not a favorite.  The plot seemed lacking.
I love the great books mentioned throughout and how Ms. McDonald organizes them into helpful lists at the end.

Stink and the World's Worst Super-Stinky Sneakers # 3 by Megan McDonald illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds*

My eight year old read this book to himself.  This is his review.
"Stink and his friends go on a field trip to a science museum where they focus on sense of smell. They get posters for the world's most stinky sneakers contest and he wants to go to it."
*Highly recommend.

My First Little House Books County Fair adapted from the Little House Books illustrated by Jody Wheeler*

This adaption was excellent.   Almanzo's  love for horses and food was a focal point in the story!
Almanzo and his family enter items from their farm in the county fair.  Almanzo waits impatiently as the judges examine the different pumpkins, hoping that his pumpkin entry will win.
A perfect book to read before exploring a rural fair (or after the fair to make connections and reminisce.).
I had read Farmer Boy to my boys last year so they enjoyed revisiting Almanzo.
*Highly recommend.

Mr. Lemoncello's Library Olympics by Chris Grabenstein*

Return to Mr. Lemoncello's energetic library where young bibliophiles from across the country are competing in contests which center on books.  Can the home team hold their own and win?  Charlie Chiltington and his mother are still festering over losing the previous contest and set out to sabotage Mr. Lemoncello and his library.
I enjoyed this book but I like Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library better.
*Highly recommend.
*Borrowed from the library.
A list of all the books mentioned through out the novel is included in the book.
Points to discuss: the first amendment and banned books

Bink and Gollie -Two for One by Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee illustrated by Tony Fucile

In this sequel, Bink and Gollie spend a day at the State Fair-trying to whack a duck and participate in a talent contest.  The whack duck contest really made me laugh!!
Sweet friendship story.
Warning: The girls visit a fortune teller who gazes into a crystal ball.  Fun to infer how she knew the topics she stated.

Frank Pearl in the Awful Waffle Kerfuffle by Megan McDonald illustrated by Erwin Madrid*

Frank would like to win just one contest.  In three chapters the reader can enjoy watching Frank attempt to win three different contests.
Humorous!
*Highly recommend.
Perfect for 2nd-3rd grade readers.
Warning: "poopy head" is mentioned several times in one chapter.
