A Chinese Folktale
Mr. and Mrs. Haktak have lived with very little all of their lives. One day, when Mr. Haktak is digging in the garden, he unearths a huge brass pot. He lugs it home to present to Mrs. Haktak. She isn't very pleased with his find and bends over to inspect it. Her hairpin falls into the pot and she pulls out, not just the hair pin, but two hairpins!
Needless to say, life changes for this humble couple . . . with some humorous complications!
My eight year old read this to himself during reading to support our brief study of Ancient China. He found the story humorous!

The Pioneer Woman Cooks- Come and Get It! by Ree Drummond**
We love recipes from the Pioneer Woman!!
My sister in-law and brother gave the newest PW cookbook to me for my birthday and almost every week since then I have been trying at least one of the recipes.
Once again PW shares many delicious recipes which are easy to make.
Our favorites so far are:
1. Crunchy French Toast Sticks
2. Orange-Blueberry Muffin Tops (made twice already!)
3. Hot Corn Dip
4. Cap'N Crunch Chicken Strips
Of course the cookbook contains beautiful photographs of the family ranch and sweet commentaries about the family members.
**Highly, highly recommend.
I own this book (and all of her cookbooks!!).

The Dinner That Cooked Itself by J. C. Hsyu and Kenard Pak*
An Ancient Chinese Folktale
Old Lin and Madame Lin raised Tuan, who lost his parents as a child. In time Tuan moved into his own home, working for the magistrate during the day and in his garden in the evening. Loneliness settles into his soul, and Old Lin and Madame Lin ask the matchmaker to find him a mate. The eligible ladies, however, are not good matches and Tuan continues his solitary life. One evening he discovers a large snail in his garden and decides to diligently care for it. The next evening, when he arrives home, he finds a feast prepared for him on the table and these feasts continue thereafter.
Who is providing these scrumptious meals?
A delightful story!
My eight year old and I took turns reading this story to support our brief study of Ancient China.

This is an audio collection.
Unfortunately the library identification sticker jammed our CD player in our vehicle so we only listened to a few of her talks. After we safely removed it from our vehicle CD player, we listened to her theories about the Hittites from our home CD player.
Some her talks include:
Dates for Creation
Early Man
Where Did Cain Get His Wife?
The Table of Nations
Discovery of Troy
Discovery of Ur
The Rosetta Stone
The Hittites
Discovery of Nineveh
*Highly recommend.

A greedy raja refuses to share his stored rice with his people during a famine/drought. A clever village girl, Rani, however, outwits him and teaches him a lesson in kindness.
A wonderful book to share in conjunction with math and problem solving.
The illustrations are beautiful.

Once a Mouse by Marcia Brown*
Award winner-The Caldecott Medal
This simple yet profound fable from Ancient India can be enjoyed by a variety of ages.
A hermit frees a mouse from the clutches of a crow's beak and feeds him some comforting food. But when a cat threatens the mouse, the hermit magically changes the mouse into a vicious cat. Each time the "mouse" faces danger, the hermit transforms him into a bigger and more intimidating creature. At last the "mouse" is a formidable tiger. Pride is the animal's downfall.
All the illustrations are created with woodcuts-amazing!
My eight year old read this to himself to support our study of Ancient India.
Strategy: inferring
Wonderful word choice too.
