The Fire Within by Chris D'Lacey

My oldest son loves fantasy, dragons etc so I am constantly on the look-out for good dragon books.
This book, however, focused more on rescuing squirrels than the dragons.
The main character, David, is a college student looking for a place to reside while attending a nearby college.  Liz Pennykettle creates dragons out of clay.  It is at her residence that David settles.  Lucy, Liz's eleven year old daughter, quickly befriends David, conniving him into helping her rescue a squirrel with one eye.
Slowly David realizes that the dragons Liz creates come to life and understands more about about the stories behind some of the dragons.
Guided Reading Level: X (5th and up)
Grade Level Equivalent: 5.3
Warning/point to discuss: David meets a young lady named Sophie and "looks her up and down".  A promising romance buds in this book between the two of them.
This book is part of a series.
*Borrowed from the library.
