The Most Wonderful Thing in the World by Vivian French illustrated by Angela Barrett*

Beautifully illustrated and a precious story.
A king and queen have sheltered their only daughter, Lucia.  When it comes time for her to marry, the make an announcement, that the suitors should bring the "most wonderful thing in the world".  If they agreed with their choice, he could have her hand in marriage.  Many suitors flood the palace but nothing the suitors brought appealed to the king and queen. Is there anyone who is suited for their daughter?
Meanwhile, since the king and queen are preoccupied with the suitors, the princess, for the first time ever, exits the castle to explore her kingdom.  Salvatore, a commoner, who knows the kingdom well, is her official guide.
A lovely ending!
