Grimloch Lane is . . .well, grim. The people are despondent until a stranger arrives to the town and creates creatures in the trees (topiary). William, a young man, who one can infer from the illustrations, is an orphan, is amazed and eventually discovers the man behind the magnificent sculptures. Once the man leaves, will the magic continue?
The coloring in the illustrations depicts the mood as the story unfolds.
When we finished this book, my third grader said, "I wish this book wasn't over!". My boys loved it!
Strategies: inferring, compare/contrast (the town from the beginning to the end).
*Highly recommend.
*Borrowed from the library (but maybe buying it shortly!)
