The Sleeping Porch by Karen Ackerman illustrated by Elizabeth Sayles

A family from the city finally is able to move to the country into the mother's house of dreams.  The house has what she calls a "sleeping porch" which stimulates fond memories from her childhood.
After they are settled into their new home, an intense rainstorm causes major leaks all over the house.  As a result, they all cuddle up on the sleeping porch for the night.
Some similes are used in the book.
