Stink and the Ultimate Thumb-Wrestling Smackdown #6 by Megan McDonald illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds*

My eight year old read this book to himself.  He loves this series!  After reading it, he wanted to make the thumb-wrestling masks like Stink.
Stink is a very intelligent kid.  Receiving an "unsatisfactory" in Phys. Ed. devastates him so he resolves to "get in shape".
