Emperor's Ostrich by Julie Berry*

Ms. Berry has crafted a novel that contains humor, adventure, an intriguing plot with likable characters.
When dependable Begonia follows her mother's orders to find their errant cow, Alfalfa, she has no idea that she is out to save the kingdom of Camellion.  Along the way she encounters many interesting individuals but Alfalfa continues to elude her.  Two males join her in the search: Key-"Finder of Things That Are Lost" and an arrogant, bratty Lumi.  When she finally finds Alfalfa, to her dismay, she realizes that Alfalfa and Lumi's ostrich won't part company.
Underneath all of these unusual, humorous exchanges, is a sinister plot to deceive the people of Camellion is in process.  Can a dairy maid, an orphan boy and obnoxious young man truly save the kingdom?
*Highly recommend.
-Borrowed from the library.
Warning: The people in this kingdom worship their ancestors and a couple of ancestors make their appearance in this book.  They are considered a guiding source, like gods. Spoiler alert-Grandfather Spirit changes into a demon to scare the Emperor out of his bedchambers.  He changes into the demon a couple of times to make his point to the Emperor.
