Lincoln's Spymaster by Samantha Seiple*

"Allan Pinkerton, America's First Private Eye"
Allan Pinkerton had discovered an island with perfect trees for materials for his barrel making business.  One day when he rowed out there he stumbled upon something suspicious so he investigated and reported his findings to the sheriff.  Together they captured an entire gang of counterfeiters.
This event led Mr. Pinkerton to open the first detective agency in the nation.  Mr. Pinkerton and his company help thwart the first assassination attempt on Lincoln, spy on the Confederates, take down the Reno Brothers Gang and Jesse James and his gang.  His legacy lives on as a firm security firm, Pinkerton Consulting and Investigations.  Pinkerton and his methods also heavily influenced the FBI's operations which are still utilized to this day.
Extremely interesting and well written.
Text structure: narrative
Text features: chart of characters, photographs with captions, bold and italic font, index
*Highly recommend.
Borrowed from the library.
Reading Level: 7.2
Warning: Ms. Seiple does not shy away from gruesome details which are part of history (Civil War battle details, men being hung and dangling, a bomb which kills a boy and leaves a mother's arm hanging by a thread etc).  Some quotes are included in which the person swears.
