Bonny's Big Day by James Herriot illustrated by Ruth Brown*

Mr. Herriot, the veterinarian, is surprised to discover that no nonsense Farmer John Skipton allows two of his former workhorses a leisurely retirement in his back field.  Each day the old farmer trudges up and down hills to visit the horses and to give them hay or oats.  Mr. Skipton has pets!
So when the Darrowby country fair hosts its annual  Show, Mr. Herriot encourages John to bring Bonny, one of the horses, to participate in the pet show.  Will the shy, gruff farmer acquiesce?
