Saving Winslow by Sharon Creech*

What a sweet book!
Louie misses his brother Gus who is serving in the United States Army.  So when his father brings home a sickly, motherless donkey from his Uncle Pete's farm, Louie welcomes the distraction.  Louie resolves to restore this baby donkey to health.  Overtime, neighbors are visiting the donkey, especially Nora who is has a negative outlook on life.  Nora cautiously loves Winslow.  Mrs. Tooley, their next door neighbor, however, despises Winslow, claiming that his braying wakes up her newborn baby.
As the story progresses, the reader realizes it may not be Louie who is saving Winslow, but Winslow rescuing the various characters.
-The chapters are short which will appeal to reluctant readers.  Although the book is short and a quick read, Ms. Creech weaves in deeper themes to ponder.
*Highly recommend.
-Borrowed from the library.
