The Tree That Came to Stay by Anna Quindlen illustrated by Nancy Carpenter

A family of five drives to a Christmas tree farm to select a Christmas tree.  Each child has an opinion of the perfect tree.  When Bubba, the youngest child, literally falls into a tree, they all decide it is the tree to take home.
The children enjoy the festivities of the season and are deeply heartbroken when the tree must be taken out to the trash.  An ingenious mother comes up with a solution which allows the children to experience Christmas long into the winter months.
Borrowed from the library.
